Woodworking runs in the veins of Matt Blackford's family. His grandfather was an accomplished wood carver and his father retired as a high school woodshop teacher. Matt learned woodworking skills early in life from these two fine craftsmen.
As a youngster, he built wooden sailboats and moved on to more challenging projects building furniture. Today, he devotes much of his time creating fine handcrafted wood pens, another skill learned from his father. Working closely with his dad, he is able to source some of the finest hardwood from around the country for these unique works of art.
Looking for something unusual for gift? Consider a beautiful pen cut from the staves of a charred tiger oak barrel used in making Jim Beam Bourbon whiskey. These blanks have the aroma of the world famous Jim Beam Bourbon Whiskey prior to finishing. A turned pen made from an oak barrel has a story to tell and makes a great gift for your whiskey loving friends and family.
Matt also turns pens from Jack Daniel's whiskey barrels. This pen has been in "good spirits" for the last seven years. The barrels are coopered by hand, from charred white oak and metal hoops. The seasoned wood is a beautiful color and rare to find.
Matt has a number of wood stories to share through his pens made from Red and White Wine barrels, Olive Wood, Beetle Kill Ponderosa Pine, and other fine hardwoods. All are surprisingly affordable under $75, comfortable to hold, and will have you coming back for more.
