Steve Buck
Hunter-Wolff Gallery is privileged to exhibit the fine pottery made by Colorado artist Steve Buck. Since 1972, Steve has been working with clay and today is considered one of Colorados finest and most accomplished ceramic artists. He is perhaps the grand master of the Raku technique, teaching and lecturing on the subject for more than two decades.
Working full-time creating Raku, Stoneware, Sager, Saltware and using other firing techniques, Steve is able to offer a collection of work beyond comparison Examples of his work can be found in private collections around the globe and at only three fine art galleries in Colorado, including Hunter-Wolff Gallery. Collectors are drawn to the distinctive look and unique glazes formulated by Steve that capture a rainbow of colors--from soft pastel yellows, blues and pinks to brilliant coppers and golds.
Like many fine artists, the very talented Steve Buck knew from an early age that he would eventually make his living and support his family using his hands and clay. Since high school, Steve has been throwing and selling ceramics. In 1977 and in his early 20's, he took on the additional role of teaching at the cultural center in Aurora for about ten years. In the mid-1980's, Steve accepted a position teaching at the Arapahoe Community College in Littleton, CO. Over the years, he has been called upon as an expert to lecture and hold workshops about the techniques and finer points of quality pottery-making.
When asked about his Raku techniques and firing processes, Steve smiles and says, "Raku is a daring process and a great many pots simply explode during some phase of the firing. If you own a piece, yours survived the ordeal--the test of fire." His private studio is as impressive as is his work. Working alone, he operates six kilns--four gas-fired and two electric kiln--nearly year round. Each piece is unique and often an amazing surprise when removed from the combustion chamber, the last step in the "ordeal".
Steve's expertise clearly sets him apart not only in design or glazing but in the finer details that draws in the admirer to touch and study each handcrafted detail from a variety of angles. He creates natural yet foreign compositions, with a contemporary yet classic style. His art fits well with most décors and the high quality of his work compliments or punctuates a desired style for a lifetime. A few examples of Steve's work are found on this site but visiting the gallery is a must to find the piece that speaks to your taste and style.
