JUAN ARCHULETA
Hunter-Wolff Gallery is pleased to represent award-winning, professional artist Juan Archuleta. Growing up on his grandparents’ Louisiana farm, Juan constantly sketched the world around him. In his early school years, he was known as "the kid who could draw nearly anything." At age ten, while riding in the club car of the Southern Pacific train, Archuleta recalls drawing portraits of fellow passengers—a talent that soon became a way to earn extra spending money. Largely self-taught, Archuleta has remained a dedicated student of art. He briefly attended California College of Arts and Crafts and later studied at Scottsdale Art School in Arizona. According to him, “Art, much like science, is a field where students never truly graduate. To be alive means we are always learning.”
Archuleta began his professional artistic journey as a portraitist in 1972. Since 1976, he has supported his family by devoting himself to landscape and forest scene paintings, earning him acclaim for scenes inspired by his deep connection with nature and its countless mysteries. His iconic redwood themed paintings invite viewers to reflect on grand contrasts—such as the delicate presence of a deer amid the enduring power and the majestic, towering redwoods.
When discussing his varied techniques, Archuleta explains, “Some paintings are light and wash-like, similar to watercolors; others use thicker layers of paint, or impasto. In some works, he adopts an impressionistic style, while in others, Archuleta focuses on detail. The mood of the subject and his personal interpretation shape his paintings' special message.
