JONI EMILY
Joni Emily has been painting and creating art her entire life. Her goal is to tell the compelling stories of nature, animals, and the people she has the pleasure to see and meet. Her artwork embraces the outdoors in a physical way, undeterred by rain, sleet, or snow. Joni says she is energized by being outdoors, hauling her painting gear to the rocky bed of a stream, the top of a mountain, or the edge of an overlook. As a former ski enthusiast and competitor in sprint triathlons, she realized the incredible artistic opportunities in painting dramatic landscapes and the individuals who seek to explore them.
Showcasing the beauty of nature and the strength that living beings exhibit as they meet life’s challenges is her inspiration and motivation. Her empathy toward living things drives Joni to tell their stories she sees and imagines. She is never hesitant to strap on a pair of skis or hiking boots to meet with fellow artists to paint en plein air (outside) using natural light for the best results. When painting portraits and figures, she generally uses live models but for animals and athletes, photographs are used for reference.
When painting en plein air, sunlight is constantly moving and presents a significant challeng, leading a painter to rush to capture a scene's essence. Some of Joni’s earlier works reflected this challenge, but now she first creates a comprehensive sketch and plans the composition of the painting before picking up her brush. Joni says, “The confident brush strokes of great painters such as John Singer Sargent, the esteemed figurative artist Bruce Vanderwilt, and the award-winning plein air painter Greg LaRock have inspired the direction and focus of my artworks.”
